How it Began
Our journey with using "good" bacteria to treat sick animals began in early 2012. It had been making news in human medicine, so couldn't it benefit animals as well?

The Story of Stovin
Stovin, a 3 year old standard poodle, came to us underweight, unable to stand, and with a dire prognosis. Stovin had always been sick, at 9-weeks of age he was diagnosed with IBD (Irritable Bowel Disease) which was unmanageable without antibiotics. Over the years, Stovin’s condition worsened. He was having such severe intestinal distress; his health began to quickly deteriorate. His owner spent approximately $16,000 for testing, medications, and blood transfusions – but nothing seemed to help.

The Integrative Approach
Open to trying integrative medicine, Stovin’s owner brought him to MASH. He was 43 lbs., unable to walk, and on a cocktail of antibiotics for the recent flair up in his IBD and resulting ailments. We immediately performed ozone treatments and acupuncture to ignite Stovin’s natural healing capabilities and replaced all but 1 of his medications (Carafate) with dietary supplements. After 2 days, we repeated the treatments and Stovin’s health began to significantly improve. He was energetic, running, and intestinal distress had resolved.

Our First MBRT
As Stovin’s health stabilized, we experimented with MASH’s first fecal transplant – Micro-Biome Restorative Therapy (MBRT). This therapy, also known as Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT), had been gaining traction in human medicine for healing intestinal infections caused when antibiotics kill off the “good” bacteria in the digestive system (such as Clostridium difficile). Since Stovin had been on antibiotics for so long, we wanted to see if this type of therapy would help him. With consent from the owner, we had Stovin ingest the stool from Dr. Roman’s healthy, organically raised dog. We repeated it a few days later and the transformation was remarkable.

Other Successes with MBRT
Since Stovin MASH has performed over 5,000 fecal transfers as part of our supportive care for both dogs and cats. We have used this therapy, in conjunction with ozone, to treat cases like Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD), Clostridium difficile, Clostridium perfringens, Giardia, liver failure, kidney failure, allergies, aggressive behavior, Plechner syndrome, atypical Addison’s disease, atypical Cushing’s disease and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).  We continue to be amazed by the results.
