Rabies is still a growing problem in
Massachusetts.
In September of 1998, 76 positive cases of rabies were diagnosed
from 55 towns in 11 counties across the state.Included were 46 skunks, 19 raccoons, 5 bats, 4 cats, & 2
woodchucks. A positive was found in Ashland, right next door. Please educate your children
about the dangers of petting wild or stray animals. Do not attempt to feed, touch, or
capture wild animals, even if they are just babies. Moms dont appreciate it. If you
are having trouble with a particular animal, contact your local animal control. Dont
take matters into your own hands. Tips for avoiding contact include covering trash
containers securely and not leaving food out where it may attract wildlife. Remember, if
your pet comes in contact with a wild animal or has a wound of unknown origin, we need to
see him or her immediately to review their rabies status and re-booster. The state takes
Rabies very seriously and so should you. Keeping your pet vaccinated can save his or her
life!
