Yearly exams for your pets are important to ensure that your pet is healthy. These visits include a physical examination, blood tests, fecal tests and vaccinations. Vaccinations are given with the intent to protect our pets from harmful diseases. But are yearly vaccines for your pet really necessary?
|
What you may not know is that many pets hold onto the antibodies they need from their very first vaccination, and adding the same vaccine is an unnecessary stress to your pet's immune system. By repeating these vaccines on an annual basis, we could be contributing to chronic diseases including skin allergies, autoimmune disease, and even cancer.
Now, we are not suggesting that you should skip your annual exam. Having your pet seen regularly by your vet is essential for your pet's health and well-being. It is important to make sure that your pet is protected. Blood tests known as antibody titers can show the immunity your pet has against these diseases, and help to determine if your pet needs to be re-vaccinated.

At MASH, we recommend running a yearly titer test with your annual exam to determine your pet’s immunity and ongoing vaccine needs.
So before you re-vaccinate your pet, ask your vet about titer testing.
