Alexandra Kilgore “Alix” grew up in Connecticut and always had a passion for science and medicine. She graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a degree in biochemistry and began her career in the field of immunology and leukemia research. Medical research inspired her interest in comparative medicine. Her love of nature, her pets, two Irish setters and three cats, and rescuing an owl in the White Mountains were her inspiration to be a veterinarian. She graduated in the first class of Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1983. During vet school Alix spent time at the National Zoo in Washington D.C. and worked at Franklin Park Zoo in Boston.

She began practice as a new graduate with significant experience with avian and exotic patients and became one of the first veterinarians in New England to do surgical sexing of birds laparoscopically. She practiced small animal avian and exotic medicine at Littleton Animal Hospital in Littleton, Massachusetts for 34 years. She was the Massachusetts liaison to the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) for 20 years and the New England Avian and Exotics Rounds Coordinator for 10 years. She has published numerous articles and has given presentations to the Association of Avian Veterinarians, the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, and the Tufts Avian Exotic Conference. She loves all aspects of small animal medicine and surgery and performs many specialized surgeries such as avian spays, shell and beak repair, guinea pig spays, ferret adrenal and pancreatic surgery, and small mammal dentistry.

Her most favorite surgery was removing construction staples and other hardware from the crop and gizzard of a peacock named Peaches who obviously liked shiny things!
Alix also has always had a strong interest in homeopathy, herbal and other holistic alternative modalities including ozone treatment and fecal biome transplants. Dr. Roman is a close family friend has treated her pets in the past and also inspired Alix's daughter Jen to obtain a degree in Naturopathic Medicine. At home Alix enjoys kayaking, snow shoeing, and hiking and camping with her husband and their dogs Brittany and Sulley. Her hobbies include sewing crafts, reading, gardening and photography of birds especially hummingbirds. |
