Let it snow
Let it snow
let it snow

Wintertime is here. And although our pets love playing in the snow, there are some risks that come with winter. Here are some tips to get through the snowy season safely.

Our walkways and roads become icy and need treatment to safely travel on them. But have you thought about how the salt used to treat the roads can affect your pet? Rock salt is generally what is used to treat the roads. And although it makes travel safer, it can pose a threat to your pet. Rock salt can cause discomfort or pain on your dogs paws. If your pets paws are dry and cracked from the harsh winter weather, it can be excruciating. Like rubbing salt into a wound.

If your pet licks the salt off their paws, it can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. If they ingest enough of the salt, it can cause liver damage and even death. But don't worry. There are ways to protect your pet. Try to avoid areas that are treated with salt. If you must walk treated areas, here are some tips.
First, make sure you wipe down your dogs paws to get any salt residue off. Don't forget to get in-between their toes. You can treat your dogs pads with a product like Musher's Secret before you go on your walk. Musher's Secret is a blend of 100% pure natural waxes (including White and Yellow Beeswax, Carnauba, and Candelilla Wax) and White & vegetable oils with vitamin E.

You can also get them a pretty snazzy pair of boots, or 2 pairs! It may take some time and training for them to get used to the shoes, but it will be entertaining. (YouTube it. Trust us!)

If you need to treat your walkway, try to choose an ice melt that will be safe for your pet. There are many products out there that claim to be Safer for Pets! This does not always mean that it will be safe for your pet to walk on. It could be a blend of rock salt with additives. Do your research on what product would be best for your pet. We have been using Safe Paw for years at our clinic, and have been very happy with it.
If your dog does slip and fall, call your vet to see if medical attention is necessary. They may recommend x-rays and NSAIDs. We use a combination of Ozone therapy, chiropractic adjustments, and acupuncture to help injuries heal faster.
